About a year and a half ago I was feeling a little fed up with DC and Marvel comics, Marvel especially, and decided to pick up some Image books and give them a try. That turned out so well that earlier this year I decided to do the same to the small press comics. Now I’m still primarily interested in the super-hero genre, so I wasn’t interested in a lot of them, but as it turns out there are quite a few books that are at least tangentially related to super-heroes. Bizarre New World is one of the better ones in this category.

Normally I just delete spam with only a glance. Sometimes I receive a piece that is entertaining. Here is one I got today:

I am ready to kill myself and eat my dog, if medicine prices here (site removed) are bad.

Look, the site and call me 1-800 if its wrong..

My dog and I are still alive.

So the question is, is he going to kill himself before he eats his dog, or after?

I ordered this book blindly out of Previews. I wanted to see if they could bring back a comic that, with the help of a paranoid nation and some opportunistic jerks, almost brought down the entire comic book industry. Did they succeed? Are we in danger of another round of Wertham and McCarthy style repression? Maybe for that second question, but not because of this book.

I just finished watching Hulk on DVD. I saw it in the theater when it came out, so the movie’s faults were not a surprise to me. I really wanted to like this movie so I went into my second viewing with only vague memories from when I first saw it, and low expectations. They weren’t low enough.

Right up front I have to say that this series hasn’t been great. While I don’t think that it was as awful as some bloggers have made it out to be, it certainly hasn’t lived up to its potential. The first couple of issue were rather boring. It’s been getting better, but not very fast.

This issue featured the end of the Lightning Saga which has been one of my favorite stories in recent time. Finally we got to see the REAL Legion again and they were treated with respect. I think Waid meant well with the reboot of LSH, but it hasn’t worked for me at all. I’ll get more into that at some other time.
