Tales from the Crypt #1

Tales from the Crypt #1I ordered this book blindly out of Previews. I wanted to see if they could bring back a comic that, with the help of a paranoid nation and some opportunistic jerks, almost brought down the entire comic book industry. Did they succeed? Are we in danger of another round of Wertham and McCarthy style repression? Maybe for that second question, but not because of this book.

Back in the 1950s when Wertham and McCarthy were doing their best to destroy everything that America should be about, EC Comics was publishing controversial tales of horror and gore. Most of these stories suffered from artwork that would be considered amateurish today, and stories that were little more than threadbare plots outlines. Still, there was a sense of fun to them, and even reading them today – in spite of what some might say, I wasn’t around to read them when they first came out – one can find them to be entertaining.

I wish I could say the same about this new incarnation by Papercutz. Sadly, I can not. While I liked the cover by Kyle Baker, the interior art leaves much to be desired. I realize that this is a small press book, so I’ll just say that the art is in a style that I don’t care for. Unfortunately I have to say the same about the stories.

They book features two tales, “Body of Work” by Marc Bilgrey and “For Serious Collectors Only” by Rob Vollmar. Neither story is tremendously original, although I do think the first is somewhat enjoyable.

There are also a couple of pages featuring the Crypt Keeper, the Vault Keeper and the Old Witch, as well as a text page. For $3.95 it’s not a bad deal if you don’t mind the art style and don’t expect too much from the story.

I like to support small press efforts, so I’m hoping the second issue will be a lot better.
